Title
Department of Geosciences and Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
Bio/Description

Afzal (he/him) is a Future Faculty and Physical Sciences Postdoctoral Fellow at the Integrated Ground Water Modeling Center at Princeton University. He earned his PhD in August 2024 from the University of Texas at Austin, specializing in the modeling of subsurface water flow in Earth and planetary sciences. His research focuses on large-scale integrated hydrology in soil and firn (compacted snow) to improve understanding, prediction, and adaptation to climate change. Afzal is also investigating subsurface water flow on present-day icy ocean worlds and early Mars, with the goal of identifying potentially habitable environments. He currently serves as Co-chair of the US Association of Polar Early Career Scientists and is an Executive Committee Member of the AGU Cryospheric Sciences Section and the AGU Hydrology Section Student Subcommittee.
